A dangerous ideology was circulating through the church at Colossae, one that lessened Christ’s role and undermined believers’ new identity “in Him” (1:2, 28). Paul wrote them to warn against this false teaching and encourage the believers there to grow toward Christian maturity. In this letter, he emphasizes Christ’s authority over all evil powers, reminding us that, as believers, we are united with the risen Christ. Therefore, we share in his power and authority to fight against sin, pursue holiness, and live as distinctively Christ-like households.
